Story

Finca El Plan del Hoyo, nestled in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec highlands of El Salvador, has been a part of the de Sola family legacy since 1957. Originally focused on cattle and fruit, the estate transitioned to specialty coffee under the stewardship of Francisco R.R. de Sola and his sister Susana. This shift towards high-quality coffee production came after navigating periods of socioeconomic disruption.

Currently, the estate encompasses 100 hectares, with 14 dedicated to coffee cultivation, featuring around 60,000 trees. Varietals such as Anacafé 14, SL28, Pacamara, Pacas, and Gesha thrive here, alongside sustainable timber production. The farm's commitment to precise picking, sorting, and wash processing, coupled with its volcanic altitude and ideal climate, supports its consistent quality. El Plan del Hoyo's growing reputation in specialty coffee circles is a testament to the de Sola family's dedication and vision.

Origin

Apaneca-Ilamatepec region, Ahuachapán

The Apaneca–Ilamatepec region in western El Salvador, spanning the departments of Ahuachapán and Sonsonate, has a rich coffee cultivation history dating back to the mid-19th century. The area's volcanic soils, courtesy of the Ilamatepec (Santa Ana) volcano, combined with altitudes between 1,200 and over 1,800 meters and a stable climate, make it ideal for high-quality Arabica coffee. By the late 1800s, coffee had surpassed indigo as El Salvador's primary export, with estates in Apaneca and surrounding mountains thriving and supplying European markets. Many of these large estates were family-owned, employing local laborers, establishing a coffee culture that has persisted for over a century. Despite challenges during the 1980s civil war, which saw many farms abandoned and infrastructure decline, the region's ideal terroir ensured it remained a crucial producing zone.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, as specialty coffee markets emerged, producers in Apaneca–Ilamatepec began focusing on microlots, varietal separation, and improved post-harvest methods. The introduction of the Cup of Excellence competition in 2003 further highlighted the region's potential. Today, as a protected Denomination of Origin (DO), Apaneca–Ilamatepec is celebrated for its unique terroir and contributions to El Salvador's coffee identity. It is renowned for producing Bourbon, Pacamara, and exotic varieties like SL28 and Gesha, with diverse processing methods showcasing its versatility. The region's history reflects resilience and innovation, making it central to El Salvador's specialty coffee reputation and home to some of the nation's most award-winning farms.
