Gelcha Kindu sits within the Yirgacheffe area of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, where densely settled communities have sustained a remarkable multi-storey farming system for generations. Coffee grows beneath native trees and enset, the region’s staple crop, on small garden plots rather than broad estates. Elevations around 1,800–2,100 metres bring cool nights and slow ripening, supporting sweetness, perfume and a clear, fruit-driven structure.
Gelcha Kindu brings together the harvests of smallholder families farming within Yirgacheffe’s layered garden landscape. Their cherry is processed through Primrose Coffee, founded by Abreham Mengiste and Meseret Workneh. Meseret oversees quality and processing across the company’s station network, where traditional knowledge and controlled fermentation meet in lots designed to reveal different sides of Ethiopian coffee.
For Lot 1426, only deeply ripe cherries are sealed whole in tanks filled with carbon dioxide. Yeast activity, temperature and humidity are monitored through fermentation before the fruit is dried in thick stacks on raised beds for 25–30 days. The extended contact between fruit and seed creates the dark-fruited depth associated with Project Origin’s Indigo profile: blueberry and raisin over malt sweetness, with a full, jammy body.
