How to Brew Instant Coffee

Instant coffee has changed. What was once a quick caffeine fix has evolved into a new way to enjoy café-quality coffee anywhere, any time. With ONA Coffee Instant Coffee, convenience finally meets craftsmanship – and the result is a cup that captures the flavour, balance, and texture of freshly brewed coffee.

Whether you’re brewing at home, travelling, or serving customers in a café, here’s how to get the best out of your instant coffee.

A new approach to Instant Coffee

Instant coffee has long been associated with speed rather than flavour, but modern techniques have completely reshaped the category. At ONA Coffee, we developed our instant coffee range to ensure that quality and convenience could exist side by side.

“ONA Coffee Instant delivers true café-quality flavour and texture, not just convenience,” says ONA Coffee founder Saša Šestić. “It’s crafted by world-class baristas using the same approach and standards as our specialty range.”

Each coffee starts with specialty grade beans, roasted and extracted to preserve their sweetness and clarity. Instead of spray-drying – a process that can dull flavour – we use freeze-drying to lock in aroma and body. The result is coffee that dissolves instantly but tastes freshly brewed.

You can explore the full range, including our Maple blend and single origin coffees, via our All Coffee collection.

Simple steps to brew a great cup

Brewing instant coffee is fast – but doing it well makes a big difference. Here’s how to prepare ONA Coffee Instant for the best possible flavour.

For black coffee:

  1. Add one heaped teaspoon of instant coffee to your favourite mug.
  2. Pour in 200ml of hot water (around 90–95°C).
  3. Stir well until completely dissolved.
  4. Adjust strength to taste — add more coffee for a stronger cup or more water for a lighter one.

For milk-based coffee (such as the Maple blend):

  1. Add one heaped teaspoon of Maple instant coffee to your cup.
  2. Dissolve with a small splash of hot water (about 20–30ml).
  3. Add 200ml of hot milk or your preferred milk alternative.
  4. Stir thoroughly to create a smooth, creamy texture.

Small tweaks to improve the flavour

Even though instant coffee is easy to brew, a few simple tweaks can make it taste even better.

  • Mind the temperature: Avoid boiling water, as it can scorch delicate flavours.
  • Use fresh water: Filtered water helps highlight clarity and sweetness.
  • Measure carefully: Too much instant coffee can create bitterness, while too little may taste flat.
  • Experiment with milk texture: Frothing or steaming milk adds a café-like mouthfeel to your Maple brew.

These quick adjustments help bring out the same flavour balance you’d expect from an espresso-based or filter coffee.

Instant Coffee vs Freshly Brewed

So, how does instant coffee compare to your usual espresso or pour-over? It all comes down to process and purpose.

Freshly brewed coffee extracts flavour in real time — the aroma, oils, and texture develop as the water passes through the grounds. Instant coffee, on the other hand, is brewed, concentrated, and freeze-dried to preserve those same compounds in a soluble form.

While traditional brewing offers hands-on control, instant coffee excels in flexibility. You don’t need grinders, scales, or complex equipment, just hot water and milk. The result can be remarkably close in taste and texture, especially when made using high-quality beans and careful extraction.

“We approached instant with the mindset that quality could not be compromised for speed,” says Saša. “Every step, from sourcing to production, was tailored to preserve flavour, balance, and integrity.”

For cafés, ONA Coffee Instant opens new possibilities: efficient service during busy periods, portable options for customers, and easy preparation for events or travel. It’s a bridge between barista craft and everyday convenience.

Enjoying the everyday cup

ONA Coffee Instant was designed to make great coffee simple, not simplified. Whether you prefer a bright, fruit-forward black coffee or a creamy Maple with milk, every cup delivers the same clarity, sweetness, and balance found in our cafés.

Instant coffee has finally earned its place in specialty coffee. It’s not about replacing the ritual of brewing, it’s about expanding where, how and when we enjoy it.
