Story
Seventy-five kilometers beyond Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia’s Guji region lies Hambela, a 200-hectare coffee farm that includes a wet mill, dry mill, drying beds, and parchment storage. The farm is owned and operated by three brothers—Aman, Michael, and Tariku Adinew—who also run METAD, a specialty coffee company renowned for high-end Ethiopian coffees. The property, originally belonging to their parents, had been abandoned for decades until the brothers invested in reclaiming the family tradition of coffee farming. Hambela is certified organic, and the team is deeply committed to both people and quality coffee.
The farm contains multiple cherry drop spots and is located at the highest peak of Guji, Hambala. Coffee is harvested once a year between November and January by local farmers following the red cherry hand-picking tradition. Natural processing highlights the rich aromas of these fine beans, and all coffee from Hambela is graded G1.

Origin
Guji, Ethiopia
The Guji region lies in southern Ethiopia, within the Oromia zone, and sits at elevations between 1,500 and 2,350 meters above sea level. Coffee here thrives in a lush, forested landscape of fertile volcanic soil, shaded canopies, and ample rainfall — ideal conditions that nurture slow cherry development and exceptional flavor complexity.
Guji takes its name from a tribe of the Oromo people, who have inhabited these mountains for thousands of years. Originally part of the larger Sidama region, Guji became its own zone in 2002 and has since gained global recognition as one of Ethiopia’s most distinguished coffee origins.
Though located near Sidama and Yirgacheffe, Guji coffees are distinct in both profile and character. They often showcase vibrant fruit notes, refined sweetness, and floral aromatics — a reflection of the region’s unique microclimates and diverse terrain. With its combination of altitude, fertile soil, and deep cultural heritage, Guji continues to stand out as one of Ethiopia’s most expressive and celebrated coffee-producing areas.
