Story

Of all Ethiopian coffee growing regions Yirgacheffe is perhaps the most well-known and recognised. The incredible forests throughout the area, comprised of ancient coffee trees, has led to a bio-diverse environment where native trees grow at the altitude in which they benefit most, including the many wild mutations.

Working with managers from local washing stations, and with Meseret Workneh and Abraham Mengiste – owners of Primrose Coffee – local farmers harvest and deliver coffee cherries for sorting and processing. This lot, a Natural Heirloom coffee, was created from hand-selected coffees with a brim of 18-22, which were then dried in full sun over 18-30 days with regular turning. The dried beans are then stored to maximise sugar and fruit flavour until milling and export.

Origin

Gedeo, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia

Ethiopia is widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee, the origin from which all other varieties trace their roots. Among its many coffee-growing regions, Yirgacheffe stands out as one of the most recognised and celebrated. The region’s lush forests, home to ancient coffee trees and countless wild mutations, create a uniquely biodiverse environment. Native shade trees thrive at high altitudes, fostering ideal conditions for exceptional coffee growth.

While the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX) designates all coffees from this wider area as “Yirgacheffe,” the actual Yirgacheffe woreda forms only part of the larger Gedeo Zone, where this coffee was cultivated and processed.

In partnership with local washing station managers and Meseret Workneh and Abraham Mengiste, owners of Primrose Coffee, smallholder farmers carefully harvest and deliver ripe coffee cherries for sorting and processing. This lot, a Natural Heirloom,  was produced from hand-selected cherries with a screen size of 18–22, then dried under full sun for 18–30 days with regular turning. After drying, the beans are rested to develop their vibrant fruit and sugar complexity before final milling and export.
