Story

Ethiopia is widely recognised as the ‘birthplace’ of all coffee, and the origin from which all exisiting coffees originated. Of all Ethiopian coffee growing regions Yirgacheffe is perhaps the most well-known and recognised. The incredible forests throughout the area, comprised of ancient coffee trees, has led to a bio-diverse environment where native trees grow at the altitude in which they benefit most, including the many wild mutations.

The Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX) recognises all coffees from this area as ‘Yirgacheffe’; however the woreda (zone) of Yirgacheffe only makes up part of the Gedeo Zone, where this coffee is grown and processed. Working with managers from local washing stations, and with Meseret Workneh and Abraham Mengiste – owners of Primrose Coffee – local farmers harvest and deliver coffee cherries for sorting and processing. This lot, a Natural Heirloom coffee, was created from hand-selected coffees with a brim of 18-22, which were then dried in full sun over 18-30 days with regular turning. The dried beans are then stored to maximise sugar and fruit flavour until milling and export.

Origin

Gedeo, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia

While Ethiopia is famous as coffee’s birthplace, today it remains a favourite of specialty coffee industry for its incredible variety of flavours and ties to the history of coffee. While full traceability has been difficult in recent history, new regulations have made direct purchasing possible. We’re partnering directly with farmers to help them produce top quality specialty lots that are now completely traceable, adding value for farmers and roasters, alike.

Yirgacheffe coffees, especially the natural ones, offer a tantalizing array of flavours, and Ethiopian coffee beans offer bright, fruited and floral flavours compared to other origins. The taste profile of the natural coffees is a delightful mix of chocolate, citrus, and berry, with a high to medium acidity and an elegant, smooth mouthfeel. This diversity of flavours will pique any coffee enthusiast’s interest.

Today, the region of Yirgacheffe is considered some of the highest quality Arabica coffees in the world and known for its unique fruit-forward flavour, thanks to the ideal growing conditions of this area drastically decreasing the need for chemical-based farming and enabling generations of thriving, healthy coffee trees.
