Story
Finca Roma is part of the Gaitania Community in the department of Tolima, an area rich in history and coffee. Located 331 kilometers from the capital city of Bogotá, the area boasts an altitude range from 1,400 metres at the town centre all the way up to 5,355 metres.
The farm started on its path of coffee cultivation in 2016, with environmental conservation under the guidance of the local Nasa Wes’x community. Over more than eight years, they’ve improved conditions for the soils, water sources and community depending on them, as well as planting more than 600 shade trees.
During the pricing crisis of the 90s, many coffee farmers found themselves planting opium poppy, a crop that brought more hardship to the area. Through more engaged community work and the improvement of coffee production throughout Tolima, coffee has returned to become the most important agricultural product. This particular coffee, a mixed lot of Caturra, Colombia and Castillo, was produced by the Gaitania Community Group using traditional Washed processing.

The Tolima region of Colombia is one of the more centrally located, coffee-producing regions of the country. Although many farms are located at high altitudes, with many 2000 metres above sea level, this region has historically been devastated by fighting between paramilitaries and guerilla forces. Today, it’s a region that is prosperous in coffee production among other agricultural products.
Tolima is Colombia’s third largest coffee-growing region, however accounts for roughly only 12% of Colombia’s coffee production. The majority of varieties grown in Tolima are Castillo and Colombia – however, there are many unique varieties cultivated, including this Geisha, which demonstrate both the innovation of the producers who work the land and the quality of the coffee they produce on it.
