Over the coming days, the ONA Coffee team is readying itself for the World Brewers Cup Championship, to be held between June 13-15. In particular, ONA Coffee’s Head Roaster and current Australian Brewers Cup Champion, Sam Corra, is preparing himself for what will be a testing competition.
The event will take place at World of Coffee in Budapest, which will also host events such as the World Latte Art Championship and the World Cup Tasters Championship.
Despite having helped coach or roast coffee for several international competitors and champions, Sam is excited for his first time competing in an international competition under his own name.
“My goal is to do Australia proud,” said Sam. “I want to showcase not only my personality, but show people on the world stage what we are doing with coffee.”
Having spent most of his coffee career behind a roaster, he is looking to use his time on stage to share ideas about the preparation and conception of coffee.
“Normally it’s a bit of a closed door with this sort of thing when it comes to my roasting, but now I have an opportunity to show the world what we are doing and what I can make.”
Sam says that preparing for competitions such as the Brewers Cup encourages innovation, which pushes the boundaries of a brewers skill and knowledge.
“Preparing for this competition has made me better, in every aspect,” he said. “I’m roasting better coffee, I have a better knowledge about water, I have better understanding and am more consistent in brewing and my technical and organisational skills have improved.”
Despite being a representative for his country in an international competition, Sam insists that he isn’t nervous about being on the world stage.
“I’m more excited, than anything,” he said. “I was nervous to begin with, but now I’m excited to show what we’ve done.”
“The only downside so far is the lack of sleep.”
