The ONA Coffee team sweeps the Central Region Barista Championships
Our team of baristas and roasters have once again produced standout performances at the Central Region Barista Championship held on the 26 and 27 of November. The Championship, hosted by the Australian Specialty Coffee Association, saw the ONA team achieve outstanding results, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Taking out first place in the barista category was reigning Australian Barista Champion, ONA Coffee’s Hugh Kelly. Hugh’s performance was a demonstration in coffee innovation; his signature drink was a creation of tangerine fairy floss, featuring vaporised citra hops, sous vide white peaches, and ‘Las Virginias’ espresso, served in a balloon glass.
Hugh used a washed ‘Las Virginias’ Geisha from Don Fabio in Honduras for his espresso coffees, and a blend of the Virginias and Ethiopia natural Areka for his milk-based drinks. Both coffees were sourced by Project Origin and roasted by our very own Sam Corra. As a result of the win, Hugh will be heading to the National Coffee Championships, to be held at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) from 30 March to 1 April 2017.
Rounding out the top three in the barista category were Angus Mackie, Head Barista at ONA on the Lawns, and Yanina Ferreyra of Project Origin, placing second and third respectively. Angus used an Ethiopian Chelelektu washed espresso, while Yanina used a Sudan Rume ‘La Esperanza’ from Colombia.
Coincidentally, the top three also represent the three components, or leaves, that make up the ONA brand – wholesale (Hugh), cafes (Angus) and Project Origin (Yanina).
Yanina also placed third in the Tasting Championship, successfully identifying seven of the eight sets of brews presented with a time of 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
Our Head Roaster, Sam Corra, scored another win for the ONA team, taking first place in the Brewers Cup for his filtered coffee. Sam used a natural processed Geisha from Finca Deborah in Panama, sourced from the same farm as used by the current World Barista Champion, Berg Wu of Taiwan. This varietal is very elegant, with distinct flavour notes of black plum, red apple and floral notes of rose and jasmine. Sam was praised for nailing the character of his coffee and will also join Hugh at the National Coffee Championships in 2017.
We want to say a massive congratulations to everyone who was recognised at the Central Region Barista Championships. We are so proud to see our baristas and roasters continue to explore their passion and push coffee boundaries. 2016 has been an incredible year, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve in 2017!
